Getting to Shuri Castle

Shuri sits on a hill about 6 km northeast of central Naha. The monorail is the simplest and most reliable way — especially during the 2026 opening period, when parking will be scarce.

From Naha Airport

• Yui Rail monorail (recommended): Board at Naha Airport Station (directly connected to the terminal) and ride to Shuri Station — about 30 minutes, no transfers. From the station it is a 15-minute uphill walk to the castle, or a short taxi ride. Trains run every 5–10 minutes; IC cards (Suica etc.) and the local OKICA card are accepted, and one/two-day passes are available.
• Taxi: 25–35 minutes from the airport depending on traffic. Convenient with luggage; expect roughly ¥2,500–3,500.
• Rental car: About 30 minutes via Naha IC. Not recommended during the opening period — see parking below.

Parking reality check

The official parking lot (Suimuikan, adjacent to the park) has only about 116 spaces for cars, with a 3-hour limit (max ¥1,000). It fills early on busy days, and the opening period will be busier than anything before. Private lots nearby are small. If you must drive, arrive before 9:00, or park near a monorail station elsewhere in Naha and ride in ("park & ride"). Never park on residential streets.

Walking around Shuri

• Shuri Station → Shuri Castle: 15 minutes, gently uphill along local streets.
• Around the castle: the royal mausoleum Tamaudun (6 min on foot), Ryutan pond (5 min), and the Kinjocho stone-paved road (8 min, steep) are all walkable. Wear comfortable shoes — Shuri is a town of slopes and stone steps.
• Classic route: enter via Shureimon Gate, tour the castle, then walk down the 16th-century stone road toward Kinjo Bridge for the most atmospheric exit.

Accessibility

Shurijo Castle Park lends wheelchairs, strollers and canes free of charge, and has elevators, slopes and accessible restrooms along a designated barrier-free route — ask at the information center (Suimuikan). All monorail stations have elevators. Note that the stone-paved Kinjocho road is not wheelchair-friendly.
